Daniel Docherty and Ameet Hindocha will introduce course participants to patterns from the Timurid pattern scroll known as the Topkapi Scroll. Only recently discovered (1986) and now housed in the Topkapi Palace Museum, Istanbul, Turkey, the scroll is approximately a foot wide and nearly 100 feet long! Many of the 114 patterns depicted can be found as tilings adorning mosque walls and domes built during the period of the Timurid dynasty (10th-16th Centuries). The scroll includes examples of five/tenfold girih tiling possibilities such as those found at the shrine of Darb-e Imam, Isfahan. It is a veritable treasure trove of pattern inspiration as participants will discover during this two day course.

Margi Lake will share contemplations on the sacred ‘imaginal’ nature of geometry  and will guide participants in developing harmonious colour palettes ...

Inspiration for our Sept. 2017 course was drawn from some of the world's finest and most enduring architectural monuments including Mughal Patterns from the Tomb of Itimud ad-Daula, India; Mamluk patterns from Cairo, Egypt; and patterns from the Great Mosque, Damascus, Syria. The constructions that we worked with exemplified the genius, skill and devotion of the geometers and craftsmen

- the Pattern Masters - who produced them.

Our May 2018 course explored the nature of tenfold geometry pattern ...
